Nehemiah

Saturday, January 27th, 2007

This one has more of a solid narrative from beginning to end. Both Ezra and Nehemiah read different than the previous books. I'm not sure what the difference is, exactly... God seems less immediately present... As if He is letting this stuff happen, but not talking to the people very much...

1 Chronicles

Wednesday, January 24th, 2007

LOTS of genealogies. I first noticed that Joab's various murdering sprees weren't mentioned, and he was painted as more of a great helper for David. Then I noticed that David's various sins weren't reported either (except for the census). or maybe two pages just got stuck together... but I don't think that is ...

1 Samuel

How in the world did David ever convince Saul to let him go against Goliath? It shows the desperation/insanity of Saul that he would pick a little kid to fight Goliath...

Judges

Saturday, January 13th, 2007

I think someone should make a Gideon movie... Favorite Part: beginning of chapter 3: Now these are the nations which the Lord Left, that He might test Israel by them, that is, all who had not known any of the wars in Canaan (this was only so that the generations of the ...

Julian on the Christians

Monday, August 21st, 2006

This is Emperor Julian talking about the Christians (i.e. "Atheists") Atheism [i.e. Christian Faith] has been specially advanced through the loving service rendered to strangers, and through their care for the burial of the dead. It is a scandal that there is not a single Jew who is a beggar and ...

Why I am a “single-issue knee-jerk thinker”

Wednesday, August 16th, 2006

...an open letter to the world. (Inspired by this post) What follows are the unedited ravings of a pro-life lunatic. • The best we can expect from a non-theocratic government (i.e. everything but the kingdom of God) is justice. (And we should expect that.) • Reconciliation only occurs between the living. • "Social Justice" ...

By C.S. Lewis Pretty good book overall. I find it hillarious that HarperSanFrancisco puts this quotation from The New Yorker on the front of every C.S. Lewis book they publish: If wit and wisdom, style and scholarship are requisites to passage through the pearly gates, Mr. Lewis will be among the angles.

Democrats by birth and education, we ... prefer to think that all nations and individuals start level in the search for God, or even that all religions are equally true. It must be admitted at once that Christianity makes no concessions to this point of view. It does not tell ...

Creedal

Monday, July 3rd, 2006

Almost all the Christian music (i.e. recent) that I have is praise music. I was looking the other day and found it odd that I couldn't find more than one track that would work as a creed. Can a statement of belief be worship? Are creeds only divisive?

Anthropological Insights for Missionaries

Tuesday, June 6th, 2006

by Paul G Hiebert This is a great book. It could be updated (references to the Soviet Union... Statistics projected for 15 years end in 2000... stuff like that) but even with that it is a solid read. It helped me realize certain things that are part of my culture that ...

A few posts of mine from sjcfellowsip.blogspot.com:

The Da Vinci Decrode It seems that everyone is reading this book. According to Facebook.com it is the #1 book read by college students (Facebook is a web community site for high-school and college students.) It was in hardcover for freaking ever. Why? There are all sorts of books that take pot-shots ...

Goal:

Tuesday, April 18th, 2006

My goal is not to be able to convince you rationally that the scriptures are true, but to convince you that the difficulties you have with them are not rational, they are moral. --paraphrased from Ravi Zacharias (please tell me if I changed the meaning in my paraphrase)

Searching for a Quotation

Friday, December 9th, 2005

Everyone seems to have this one from Bonhoeffer: When Christ calls a man, he bids him come and die. from Cost of Discipleship But I was looking for this one: Christ is still betrayed by the kiss. Wishing to be done with him means always to fall down with the mockers and say, 'Greetings ...

Theology is for Proclamation

Monday, December 5th, 2005

Just got done with Theology is for Proclamation by Gerhard Forde. It is a pretty radical book. It is a systematic theology that focuses on proclamation of what God said to us instead of explanation about God. Forde also lays out a strong attack against Decision Theology and anything ...

Theological Catchphrases Pt. I.V: Soteriology

Tuesday, November 29th, 2005

I took a step back and re-categorized the list. Now it is in three parts: Soteriological: having to do with Salvation. Non-Soteriological: not having to do with salvation, or one step removed. ??- I'm not sure. My bias here is that "Having to do with Salvation" means to me "Having to ...

Theological Catchphrases Pt. II: Definitions

Tuesday, November 29th, 2005

This list is really catching my desire to write, so I went back through and tried to define each term. I had a little trouble in forming each definition the same way. Some are short positive statements of doctrine, which I may or may not agree with (e.g. Trinity). Some ...

Theological Catchphrases Pt. I

Tuesday, November 29th, 2005

So I found this list of terms that have been involved in church division. I divided them (no pun intended) into three categories, Important, Not important, and Inane. Important are those that I would be excited to discuss with people, and think are worthwhile theological concepts. If I went to ...
