Wii: First Impressions
January 29, 2007 – 10:19 pmMy friend Sir Robert got a Wii. It is pretty frickin’ awesome. I have only played Wii Sports, and about 1 minute of the Zelda game.
Zelda looks alright, but is probably not the kind of game I would like. Okami (PS2) seems like a similar type of game, and I played through some of that a while back and got my “Puzzle / fighting / cartoony graphics” game quota for the decade filled up.
Wii Sports is really fun. Each sport is rather shallow in its simulation. (E.g. In baseball, there is no fielding, the computer does it all, and then arbitrarily decides if the defense threw the base runner out, without burdening you with actually seeing any sort of animation of the fielder actually throwing to a baseman. This is odd, the first time it clearly bounces in front of the short-stop and then you are called out, seemingly as if the fielder caught the ball.)
Obviously this game was designed to show off what can be done with the Wii controller, without stepping on the toes of game writers who want to make a golf, bowling, tennis, baseball, or boxing games… I think, though, that they could have added a simple tournament system into the game without killing off sales for other games; maybe I’m wrong though.
It does some cool stuff with pictures and movies on SD cards, the absolute coolest of which is the puzzle game… Which works with movies…
It was even pretty fun making my Mii, a tiny, graphical representation of myself. If I get a Wii at some point, my Mii will “wander” over into my console, along with my stats and everything, all through the power of Magic (i.e. Wi-Fi).
I haven’t seen the PS3 or Xbox360, but they look like faster PS2/Xbox -es… The Wii looks really cool, as long as the programers don’t get lazy.
One Response to “Wii: First Impressions”
when the wii was first displayed i dismissed it…but after giving it a run at the store i liked it. but…if i am gonna cough up 300 or so i really want an xbox360 so i can play gears of war. oh, and ’stalker’ for the pc looks good (so maybe a new graphics card). if i come into extra cash i might spring for the wii. it is a fun setup :)
