Why I’ll Probably Buy the Revolution (i.e. Wii)

November 11, 2006 – 6:05 pm

Consoles seem to be on a 6 year cycle. 05-06 has been the latest cycle, so we are looking at 11-12 before new consoles come out.

I actually remember when the PS2 came out… only one of my friends got one because Sony purposefully limited the supply to drive up the demand and hence the acceptable retail price. Then for two years the PS2 games that came out were expensive and about the same as PS1 games. Programmers had to learn how to take advantage of the inverted VRAM to GPU Bandwidth ratio the PS2 had (I’m still convinced that too many programmers don’t do this today.)

Anyway, the Wii isn’t that much different from the GameCube, and it is half as expensive as the PS3 (the one with wi-fi, which the Wii also has). That (i.e. I think PS3 Games will suck for 1-2 years, and the Wii might not), combined with the fact that I do not own, nor plan to own any-time soon, an HDTV, means that the Wii is the better buy now.

Of course there is the danger that programmers won’t know how to code for the weird controller the Wii sports. Nintendo makes games, so I think they will make sure that their games, at least, are worth playing.

Sony is also pretty evil (like MS; e.g. rootkit)

Oh, and I will never buy an X-Box because I’m not going to pay anyone 30 bucks a month (or whatever, on top of access fees) to get on the internet.

  2. I actually have NO CLUE about the meaning of any single sentence in this post. I guess I’m just out of the tech-geek loop. But I am able to communicate with literally hundreds of people a week at the click of a mouse and to keep track of thousands of bits of important information and to produce professional materials in a flash. My life seems generally content, so maybe that is a good thing to be ignorant about the Revolution, PS2, PS3, VRAM, GPU, Wii, evil Sony, X-Box, HDTV (or ANY tv, for that matter).

  3. i want an xbox360 just for Gears of War. But that is a bit steep for one game so i will wait awhile and stick with my PC. BioShock will be out this next year and it looks really good.
i have a ps2 and think i have used it about 10 times (it was a gift).
