Housecleaning
September 13, 2006 – 1:20 amSo… I’m not so good at the “knowing what to do when it comes to cleaning up the place.”
I’m kinda learning here and there, but I have some questions:
• What do you do when you come to a corner and there is a spider? I like spiders. I don’t want to kill them because they kill things I don’t like, like mosquitos. I just wish they would move to the upper corners instead of the ones down by the floor.
• What do you do when the entire bathroom is caulked with this really soft caulk that seems to attract all the dirt/lint/hair/dust in the room… When I try to clean it with my clorox wipes it just looks at me and laughs… I really like how they caulked the baseboards and cabinets and everything with this stuff…
• What is the point of dusting? It just comes back!

Seriously dude I cannot figure out what the point of dusting is. I mean, yeah, dust the inside of your computer cuz dust there causes problems, but like, unused shelf tops? I’m sure God put the dust there for a reason.

I’m about the least-qualified person in the world to give housekeeping advice, but I do have a few thoughts. (1) Spiders - I usually leave them alone after having learned they are actually beneficial insects. (2) Caulk - They sell “caulk cleaner” in those stores that sell commercial cleaning supplies. I’ve struggled with gunky looking caulk for years and noticed that others have done the same. I’ve finally discerned that the problem is that it is pure white - sort of the same issue as trying to keep plain white t-shirts totally clean. I’ve learned to replace the caulk in our bathtub periodically. I’ve noticed that hotels use color-coordinated caulk to keep it looking fresher. I’m planning to use beige caulk the next time I replace our caulk. (3) Dust - As you well know, I used to think that dusting was a waste of time. Upon returning home after a visit to my apartment, a youngster told her parents that I shook baby powder over everything in my house. Needless to say, her mother was a meticulous housekeeper. BUT, Swiffers and those cool dust cloths have helped me change my tune. Here’s the deal - dusting is NOT a waste of time if you can REMOVE the dust via Swiffers and those cool dust cloths. If you choose to leave the dust, you will simply have more and more dust pile on top - causing issues with nasty dust mites and allergies and damage to wooden furniture - not to mention the fact that no one will want to come visit your home.
