Guy Fawkes Day
November 5, 2005 – 1:10 pmRemember, Remember,
the 5th of November
Gunpowder, Treason, and Plot
I see no reason
Gunpowder Treason
Should Ever be forgot
It is comical to me that the Brittish would name this day after one of the guys (no pun intended) who was responsible for the Gunpowder Plot…
This day was celebrated with burning Guy Fawkes in effigy and later they added the Pope, as it was “the papists” who were responsible for the plot. The celebration came over to the US with the Puritans (Only national holiday that did) but was called Pope Day. When the Stamp Act was passed, colonists rebelled with similar celebrations, burning Tax collectors in effigy, then when the next Pope day came around, they added Tax collectors, and were so riotous that the Stamp act was repealed.
