Email Etiquette

March 18, 2005 – 5:16 pm

internetI’m not sure what to do. I’ve sent a couple of emails to people anticipating a reply. I know that lots of people are rather sporadic on checking their email, but I’ve been waiting for replies from two people for months now… Should I send another email? What should be in it?

  3. I too have encountered this sort of problem. Email is a strange beast, and the social dynamics of electronic mailing often create just such situations as yours.
In my experience, what to do next really depends on the sort of email and the person it’s to. If it’s an email with a clear external purpose (e.g. getting information, setting up an event or something similar), go ahead and send another email. If the email was “purposeless” or the purpose was essentially friendship-based, but the person you’ve sent it to is not an especially close friend, see him/her in person so that he/she can’t ignore you. A second email is not especially likely to be answered, though you may try it again if you don’t mind not getting a reply back. If the email is to a very close friend discussing close-friend things, you may send a second saying that you’d like to hear from him/her and were wondering why he/she hasn’t written back.
These rules require a certain amount of perspicacity and discretion on behalf of the sender, so I trust you to have a good perception of the situation before deciding what to do.
